ABSTRACT

Abstract Introduction: Posturography is a complementary method for evaluating the center of pressure (COP) displacement; it should not be used in isolation when assessing balance, but it is accepted for follow-up of the treatment response. Due to its high commercial cost and low availability, we documented the Nintendo Wii Balance Board (WBB) as an alternative for posturography. Aim: To describe the normal range of posturography parameters in the Chilean population without vestibular pathology, using a simple and accessible registry method. Material and Method: Cross-sectional study of referential values in a balance assessment tool. Posturography values were registered using an adapted version of the Sensory Organization Test (SOT) on healthy adults. Measurements with WBB Sway Program software through WBB. With adapted-SOT, somatosensory, visual and vestibular indices, as well as anterior/posterior and mediolateral axes postural control patterns, were measured. Results: Values of displacement velocity of the COP, COP area and corresponding standard deviations were obtained for 4 SOT-adapted situations from 35 subjects between 18-65 years, 21 women, 14 men. Discussion: As an approach to determine referential range values, WBB allowed to evaluate these parameters in healthy population. To determine healthy subjects postural control patterns this quick and accessible tool is a useful alternative. We present referential range values to use in our population; it is suggested to use these values as therapeutic objectives in vestibular rehabilitation in patients evaluated along with other clinical-symptomatic parameters.

ABSTRACT

Background: The global longitudinal strain (SLG) is a useful diagnostic tool in some defined clinical settings. There are several methods for its quantification and scarce references of ¨vector velocity imaging¨ (VVI) that validate their normal values for the left and right ventricle. Objective: To know the SLG of the left ventricle (LV) and right ventricle (RV) normal by VVI method in a healthy population and compare them with international series by the same method, to assess their correlation with other measures of systolic function, measures anthropometric and hemodynamic data. Material and methods: this is a prospective, observational study, that uses longitudinal strain by VVI method in healthy voluntaries. We selected a convenience sample of 57 healthy subjects ages ³18 years recruited prospectively. A questionnaire and physical examination, Doppler echocardiography, and regional and global longitudinal strain of LV and RV was done. For the analysis of the data the population was divided by sex, and the data of SLGLV and SLGRV obtained was compared with the obtained in a reference international population. Result: 52 patients. The values of the SLG LV: -19.8 ± 1.7; SLG RV: -20.9 ± 2.9. The comparison in terms of mean differences between our population and the international reference for the LV with same method of analysis: 0.04% (95IC -0.51-0.52; p: 0.98). Comparing with the paper of RV: -0.5 (95IC -1,2-0.17; p 0.13). Conclusion: We evaluated in detail the normal deformation of the myocardium in a cohort of healthy volunteers, and expressed for first time to the region by method of strain (VVI) SLG reference values and regional of the LV and RV. Compared with international series, these values have no significant difference with mean SLG of the LV and y RV.

ABSTRACT

Objectives: We aimed to establish the typical rate of skeletal mineralisation in the growing sheep. The sheep (size, ease of handling, cost and bone physiology) is establishing itself as an appropriate model for bone research. Materials and Methods: Body composition including bone density at 4 time points in the first two years was performed using DXA on a cohort of 14 developing lambs, as well as measurements in comparable adult sheep. Results: Adult levels of bone density are reached by 18 months and lean body mass by 2 years in sheep. Conclusions: Depending on the indications for studying bone and other metabolism in sheep, the rate of development should be considered in selecting the age group of experimental animals.

ABSTRACT

Background: Thromboelastography (TEG) is relatively recent assay to analyze the coagulation state of a blood sample, providing a continuous visualization of physical changes occurring during blood coagulation. There is a paucity of published literature on assessment of coagulation status using TEG in Indian population. Aim: The primary aim of the following study is to establish normal reference values for TEG in North Indian healthy volunteers and secondary aim is to compare them with conventional plasma-based routine coagulation tests and the manufacturers reference range. Materials and Methods: A total of 200 healthy volunteers comprised of 100 males and 100 females of age groups between 20 and 50 years, were enrolled over a period of 1 year, i.e., 2011-2012. Thromboelastometry (TEM) was performed on TEM-A automated thromboelastometer (Framar Biomedica, Rome, Italy), using whole blood non-additive (360 μl). TEG parameters analyzed were r-time, k-time, α-angle, maximal amplitude (MA). Prothrombin time (PT), activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT) and platelet count was performed for all volunteers. The 95% reference range was calculated as (mean-1.96 standard deviation [SD]) to (mean + 1.96 SD). Results: Our reference values for 95% of 200 volunteers were r-time: 1.8-14.2 min, k-time: 0.7-7.3 min, α-angle: 27.3-72.3° and MA: 32.1-87.9 mm. Maximum clot strength was higher in women compared with men, however statistically insignifi cant. Overall 14.5% (29/200) of the volunteers had at least one abnormal parameter while 74% (149/200) had deranged TEG values using the manufacturer’s reference range. Statistically signifi cant variation was seen in r-time for 84.8% (P < 0.001), for k-time, in 87.1% (P < 0.001), for α-angle in 83.7% (P < 0.001) and for MA in 84% (P < 0.001), between the manufacturer and our reference range. Conclusion: The effi cacy of classical coagulation test has been well-established; on the contrary TEG is a fairly recent assay and its utility for patient management remains to be demonstrated. We observed TEG to be oversensitive in determining coagulopathy where there is no clinical presentation. The manufacturer’s reference values may not be appropriate for different ethnicity. TEG may give an overall representation of hemostasis; however, it cannot replace the conventional coagulation tests. We recommend the determination of normal TEG values by each laboratory for their target population.

ABSTRACT

Electroretinography (ERG) is a well-established diagnostic procedure for objectively evaluating retinal function. In this study, ERG in beagle dogs, which are a popular experimental animal, was performed to determine the normal range of ERG variables and assess differences between the left and right eyes. ERG findings including rod, combined rod-cone, single-flash cone, and 30-Hz flicker responses were recorded with an LED-electrode in 43 sedated beagle dogs. The subjects were divided into young ( or = 6 years old). Normal ERG ranges were obtained. Significant differences in b-wave amplitude along with b/a ratio of the combined rod-cone response were found between the young and adult animals as well as young and senile dogs. No significant differences were observed between the left and right eyes. ERG variables in beagle dogs differed by age due to age-related retinal changes. Thus, we propose that normal ERG ranges should be determined according to age in each clinic and laboratory using its own equipment because each institution usually has different systems or protocols for ERG testing.

ABSTRACT

Objective: The capillary electrophoresis (CE) is a new system that utilizes the principle of electrokinetic separation of molecules in eight electrolyte buffer-fi lled silica capillaries. In this study, we established the normal ranges of haemoglobin A2 (HbA2) and haemoglobin F (HbF) levels for normal individuals using this system and also the HbA2 level in β thalassaemia and haemoglobin E (HbE) individuals. Materials and Methods: 154 samples from normal individuals, 218 samples from β thalassaemia heterozygotes and 91 samples from HbE heterozygotes were subjected to high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and CE analysis. Results: The normal ranges for HbA2 and HbF by CE were 2.75% (SD 0.26%) and 0.03% (SD 0.24%) respectively, which were signifi cantly lower than that of HPLC 2.88% (SD 0.25%) and 0.58% (SD 0.61%) (p <0.001). The HbA2 level for HbE heterozygotes was 3.58% (SD 0.44%), which was signifi cantly higher than normal (p <0.001) but lower than that of β-thalassaemia heterozygotes (p<0.001) and the true HbE level was 24.28% (SD 3.38%). Conclusion: The CE system provided a fully automated and high throughput system for haemoglobin analysis. We established the normal ranges for HbA2 and HbF levels by CE. We also determined the ranges for HbA2 in beta thalassaemia and HbE heterozygotes using this system.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to establish a normal range for the outer diameter of the fetal transverse colon from 28 to 40 weeks' gestation. METHODS: This prospective longitudinal study enrolled 38 consecutive women with uncomplicated singleton gestations during their first trimester of pregnancy. Ultrasound for serial measurements of the fetal transverse colon diameter were performed at intervals of 2 weeks from 28 weeks to 36 weeks and then weekly until delivery. Linear regression was used for statistical analysis. RESULTS: A total of 201 transverse colon diameters were measured in all 38 fetuses. The normal range for the outer diameter of the transverse colon from 28 to 40 weeks' gestation was presented as mean, 95% confidence interval of the mean and range. A linear growth function was observed between gestational age (GA) and transverse colon diameter (TCD) (TCD=0.499 x GA - 0.5504, r2=0.65; p<0.0001). CONCLUSION: We have presented a table of normal range and a regression formula for outer diameter of the fetal transverse colon from 28 to 40 weeks' gestation. These data may serve as reference values in the detection of abnormalities of the fetal colon.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: It has been well known that normal leukocyte counts in blood can vary depending on age, gender, other environmental factors and ethnic differe nces. However, the normal white blood cell counts in Koreans has not been settled yet. Over past several years, a large number of patients were referred to the Hematology Clinic of Asan Medical Center (AMC) for evaluation of "leukopenia", and most of them were found to have no medical problems other than leukocyte counts less than 4,000/mm3. We performed this study on persons who visited Health Screening Center to analysis of leukopenic patients and also to establish the normal value of white blood cell counts in Korean. METHOD: We studied 31,307 persons (19,540 men, 11,767 women, aged 15-90), who visited to Health Screening Center of AMC during the period from January through December 1995. We have carried out retrospec tive analysis of complete medical record of 2,406 patients (838 men, 1,568 women, aged 20-81) who were found to have leukocyte counts less than 4,000/ mm3. And we tried to establish the normal values of leukocyte counts and differential counts of 24,079 adults (15,807 men, 8,272 women, aged 19-90), who were assessed to be healthy at Health Screening Center of AMC. RESULTS: 1) Leukopenia (WBC<4,000/mm3) were found in 2,406 subjects (7.7%) among 31,307 persons screened. 2) Among them, 77 subjects (3%) had medical illness; 39 of them had chronic B or C viral hepatitis, 24 of them had iron deficiency anemia, and other diseases were de tected in remaining 14 patients. But other hematologic dis eases or significant infectious diseases were not detected. Follow-up study of them has indicated no increased incidence of infection or other hematologic diseases. 3) The total white blood cell counts of 24,097 healthy Korean adults were 3,640-9,870/mm3 (5,900/ mm3) in men, and 3,270-8,400/mm3 (5,264/mm3) in women. Neutrophil counts ranged 1,288-6,866/mm3 (3,098/mm3) in men, and 1,180-5,985/mm3 (2,816/mm3) in women. Leukocyte counts were significantly lower in female, but no significant variation was found among age groups. CONCLUSION: Normal range of leukocyte counts and neutrophil counts of healthy Korean adults were lower than those of white populations. Thus, a new normal values of leukocyte and neutrophil counts should be established in Koreans. And many persons with leuko cyte counts less than 4,000/mm3 who are otherwise he althy could be normal.

ABSTRACT

With increased use of neurotoxic agents in manufacturing industries, hazardous effects of neurotoxic agents pose significant problems in protecting health of workers who work in these industries. A normal range of neurobehavioral performance is required 10 study hazardous effects of neurotoxic agents among workers. However, such reference for Korean population is not available yet. The objective of this study is to estimate a normal range of neurobehuvioral test performance of female workers in Korea. Data for neurobehavioral test performance developed by the world Health organization were obtained from 165 female workers. Study Subjects, 140 production workers and 25 clerks, who voluntarily participated in this study were not occupationally exposed to neurotoxic agents. The mean age and the mean education years of them were 32 years and 10.9 years, respectively. Santa Ana dexterity, pursuit aiming, digit symbol, simple reaction time, and Benton visual retention tests among the Neurobehavioral Core Test Battery(NCTB) were included in the evaluation. Subjects were interviewed by a trained interviewer for their detailed occupational history. Mean(+/-SD) performance of the participants were: 45.7+/-7.1 and 41.9+/-6.4 in the Santa Ana dexterity test of the preferred and non-preferred hands; 191.9+/-38.6 in correct dot of the pursuit aiming test; 57.7+/-16.0 in the digit symbol test; 274.8+/-44.6 msec in the mean simple reaction time and 70.5+/-69.0 msec in the mean standard deviation of it; and 7.8+/-1.7 in the Benton visual retention test. Most neurobehavioral performance scores were correlated significantly with age and educational level. Educational level was found to be a significant independent variable which was associated with all test scores. Age was significantly associated with scores of pursuit aiming and digit symbol tests.

ABSTRACT

From January 1991 to June 1993, serum PSA according to age were tested by monoclonal radioimmunometric assay using ELSA-PSA 2 kit of CIS industry in 380 healthy men between 30 and 79 years of age who had normal urinalysis, no history of prostate disease and normal prostates on digital rectal examination and transrectal ultrasonography. The mean PSA values according to age were 0.775+/-0.462ng/ml in the 30 to 39-year group, 0.908+/-0.704ng/ml in the 40 to 49-year group, 0.842+/-0.468ng/ml in the 50 to 59-year group, l.393+/-0.942ng/ml in the 60 to 69-year group and 1.737+/-0.937ng/ml in the 70 to 79-year group. The upper limits of PSA (mean+2S.D.) according to age were 1.7ng/ml in the 30 to 39-year group, 2.3ng/ml in the 40 to 49-year group, 1.8ng/ml in the 50 to 59-year group, 3.3ng/ml in the 60 to 69-year group and 3.6ng/ml in the 70 to 79-year group. These results showed that mean PSA and upper limits of PSA increased significantly after 60 years of age(P values<0.01).
